King William III of England, Willem III of Orange. Statholder Netherlands. Portrait by unknown local Devon artist. Glorious Revolution 1668/1689. British Civi Wars 17th century.
A naive miniature portrait of William of Orange, King of the Netherlands and King William III, jointly with his wife Queen Mary, of England, as a young man, found in Exeter. The painting was probably executed by an unknown local artist in 1688, shortly after the King landed at Brixham and was declared King in Exeter at the start of the Glorious Revolution. The picture is notable because, unlike Court painters, the artist has painted the King as he saw him, with broken nose and anxious expression, wearing simple clothes, a lace cravat and red coat with blue facing. Oil on board, 4 inches by 5 and a half inches/10 x 14 cm.
