As:ni;i:i:.v^i:.. i THE GEOLOGY OF NATURAL GAS. 429 vania was commenced, natural gas has been obtained either in con-junction with oil or in wells which produced only a trace of oil. Inmost of the flowing oil-wells, the pressure which forces the oil up thewell results from the gas contained in the oil-sand in the immediatevicinity of the well or at a considerable distance away. In theformer case, gas is frequently mixed up with the oil as it intermit-tingly flows from the well-mouth, the gas coming from the well con-tinuously between the oil-flows ; while in the latter case, no percep-tible quantity of gas is obtained from the well. I believe that, byspecial examination, all the oil coming from the Pennsylvania andNew York wells may be proved to contain some gas. The product of gas-wells has been utilized in various ways, particu-larly for light and fuel at the towns and villages in the immediatevicinity of the wells, and also to a limited extent for the manufac-ture of lampblack—sometimes called dia
