Hewas raised on a farm, and at the age of nineteen wasapprenticed to the printers trade, which he followed,w^th intervals of other pursuits, until 1855. He thenremoved to Kansas City, Mo., andfounded the Kansas City Jour-nal, which, during the whole ofits existence, has been the lead-ing commercial and political or-gan west of St. Louis. Stronglyrepublican in politics, elevated intone, sagacious in directing pub-lic sentiment and party policy, ithas been an important factor indeveloping the wonderful re-sources of the New West. In1861 Mr. Van Horn was electedmayor of Kansas City, by theUnion element, and soon after-ward entered the military ser-vice, organizing the first Fed-eral troops in western major and lieutenant-colonelof the 25
