John KnoxChurch has exerted in the past, and isexerting to-day. a wide influence for good, but, perhaps, the greatest service it hasrendered to the denomination in Aberdeenhas been in proving that it is possible tomaintain even in the very centre of thecity and largely on the old lines, a large, strong, and flourishing congregation of thecommon people. XXXVIII.—MELVILLE UNITED FREE Melville Church. Perhaps no congregation in Aberdeenhas had a more changeful career than thatwhich is worshipping to-day in MelvilleUnited Free Church. It has witnessedmany strange ecclesiastical developments, and its history is bound up with severaldenominations. Leaving the EstablishedChurch in 175Q, its founding marked theorigin of the Secession in Aberdeen, themovement which in later years led to theformation of the United PresbyterianChurch. The congregation was originallyattached to the Burgher section of theSecession, and when the Burgher split tookplace over the Old and New Lights con-troversy it adhered to the Old Light a further stage in its history it returnedto the Established Church, leaving it again, however, to join the Free Church, andmerging with it into the larger body ofthe United Free Church of Scotland.
