The cup is composedof many flowers, each waited upon by an attendant leaf^suggesting a three-lobed cape, which seems to havebeen dipped to its centre in the most vivid scarletpaint. It is the accumulation of these which gives thecolor effect to the plant, and they are mere leaves inmasquerade. Bryant calls them bright beakers, andpictures them as holding the dew for fairies. But itis a cup only in general outline, and would prove aleaky beaker, although it has managed to hold itssecret pretty securely from many of us for AN UNDERGROUND FLOWER
