PRESIDENT: If any gentleman wishes to ask anv ques-tions on the special features that have been exhibited here, wewill give them an opportunity to do so at this time. Mr. Stucki, can we hear from you ? MR. A. STUCKI: I am sorry to say that I cannot add any-thing. This has been a very interesting paper on a very interest-ing subject, and we certainlv have cause to congratulate ourselves 346 Proceedings Railway Club of Discussion—rrcscnt Steam Turbine Progress. 347 on having- had it presented before us. We all know that the steamturbines have come to the front in recent years in a remarkablewav. They have forced their way to the front and they are to-day one of the most important sources of power. We know thatgenerally speaking turbines are very compact as compared withsteam engines. The econom} in floor space alone is certainly abig item. Another feature, very important, is its simplicity. There ishardlv anything to it, simply a casing and a rotor, and comparedfor instance with a triple expansion engine, it is a very simplemachine. There are no reciprocating parts, hence no shocks, allof which will enable us to get a smoothly running machine. Thisis turn means that a turbine needs comparatively little attention. I remember very vividly a 600 kw. machine which I saw inthe fall of IQ04 at the St. Louis Exposition and which, as theman in charge told me, ran continuously since the opening. Thisis cer
