At the shores of the Mavora Lakes low rainfall creates tussock grasslands in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Parts with more rain have a dry Nothofagus forest. In this region parts of the movie "Lord of the Rings" were produced. In der Einsamkeit der Südalpen entstehen auf Grund der geringen Niederschläge an den Ufern der Mavora-Seen Tussock-Graslandschaften. Ein paar hundert Meter weiter fallen größere Niederschläge, dort wächst ein trockener Südbuchen-Wald. An den Ufern der Seen wurden einige Szenen des Kinofilms "Herr der Ringe" gedreht.
