An old engraving of men searching for gold in water sluices and races in 1848, the earliest times of the California gold rush in the Sierra Nevada foothills, California, USA. It is from an American history book of 1895. Gold was first discovered at Sutter’s Mill (after its owner John Sutter), a water-powered sawmill on the bank of the South Fork American River in the Sierra Nevada, California. A worker constructing the mill, James W Marshall, found gold there in 1848. This discovery set off the California Gold Rush of 1848–1855.
