A cavalryman's reminiscences of the Civil War [electronic resource] . e grew tolook upon the Cumberland as being virtually the north-ern boundary of the Confederacy, and bearing out theillusion, Wayne county, Ky., was about as nearly ex-hausted agriculturally as lUount county, Tenn. So asoldier finding himself a-foot there, was well nighdestined to remain so. P>ut genius succumbs to no ob-stacles, and our dismounted friend proved himselfpossessed of that rare attribute. Leaving camp in thestill hours of the night, he made a visit to a farmersstable, or paddock, and by some means, best known toan enterprising cavalryman, induced a fairly good baymare mule to accompany him back to camp. How abalance of the night was employed subsequent eventsseem to indicate. As might have been expected, nextday found the farmer in camp, searching for his prop-erty, and, as he thought, he was not long in locatingit; for while there is a striking family resemblancebetween mules in general, he was sure that he recog-nized certain features belonging to his particular mule. Dr. AQUILLA TALBOTT 184 a cavalrymans reminiscences in one quietly munching hay near Pickles bunk. Now,while officers were always glad to have their men se-cure mounts, even if sometimes slow-footed ones werethe best to be procured, still the rights of a Waynecounty planter had to be respected. And, so the sol-dier claimant was aroused from a real or feignedsnooze, and called on for an explanation. Lazilystretching himself, he inquired what was wanted ?When told that the farmer accused him of having hismule, he became very indignant. Directing his re-marks to the claimant, he said: Why. man, if youdbeen where I got that mule you d been shaking mule came out of a government wagon we cap-tured over at Danville, where bullets were flyingthicker than bees in a swarm. This staggered thefanner a little, but he still persisted in his claim. ThenP feigned anger, and called out to know if his mulewas branded. Xo,
