False colour scanning electron micrograph of the rodlike bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gram negative). These bacteria are common in the soil, decomposing organic material & water. This species is pathogenic to man, occuring in pus from wounds & in urinary tract infections. They are also associated with infections in severe burn cases. Pseudomonads move by means of flagella (single or multiple), long hairlike threads extending from one end of the body (not visible here). Mag: X5,880 (at 35mm size).
