Back muscles, computer artwork. The three pairs of muscles on either side of the spine are the erector spinae. The innermost muscles are the spinalis muscles, which attach to the spinous processes of the vertebrae. Outside of these are the longissimus muscles. Outermost are the iliocostalis muscles. The erector spinae are the strongest back muscles. They maintain good posture and stabilise the torso. Across the back are the serratus posterior inferior muscles, which attach to the bottom four ribs (nine to twelve). They act to draw the ribcage downwards and backwards during exhalation, and rotation and extension of the body.
