The spectacular Comet Arend-Roland, photographed from Sweden on April 25, 1957. The comet was visible in the evening sky with a main tail 30 degrees long & an anti-tail of 15 degrees. The sunward-pointing spike (bottom) was in the orbital plane of the comet. The spike's large dust grains were illuminated by sunlight, & this dust was only seen when nearly edge on. The Earth had passed through the plane of the comet's orbit only 5 hours before the picture was taken. 90 min. exposure, Ilford HP3, 120mm double anastigmatic f/4. 5 lens. Exposure started at UT.
