Richard Owen (1804-1892), British anatomist and palaeontologist. Owen was the founder and first director of the Natural History Museum, London, UK. Owen became an expert in comparative anatomy and did extensive research on fossils and dinosaurs. He was initially bitterly opposed to Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection, but subsequently changed his views as Darwin's ideas became widely accepted. Owen was knighted in 1884. This oil-on-canvas painting, by Henry William Pickersgill (1782-1875), dates from 1844. Original held at the Natural History Museum.
