Europe, Mid Cretaceous period. Image 2 of 8. Computer artwork of the position of Earth's continents approximately 110 million years ago. This was during the Cretaceous period, which extended from 144 to 65 million years ago. The continents are slowly moved over the surface of the Earth by currents in the fluid mantle below the crust. Over millions of years, the continents moved into the positions they are in today. Areas that will become America are at upper left, and Africa at lower left. For the series showing Europe at different points throughout prehistory, see images E402/144 - E402/151.
