Theplates are adjustable for height and in-clination. Tlie conveyors are workedby a transverse worm shaft, which isplaced at the back end and is rotated bytwo small steam engines. On the tender. F. A. Torrey, Gen. Supt. of Motive P The 2-10-2 wheel arrangement is notnew, as it has been applied by TheBaldwin Locomotive Works to 160 loco-motives built for the Atchison, Topeka& Santa Fe Railway, and to a similarengine for the Pittsburgh, Shawmut &Northern Railway. These locomotiveswere all constructed during the years1903 to 1907. In them the rear truck wasused principally to improve the curvingqualities, and the firebox had a shallowthroat and was placed over the rear pairof driving wheels. In the new Burling-ton locomotives, the firebox is placedback of the driving wheels and above therear truck wheels, and advantage istaken of the opportunity to deepen thethroat. The increase in weight over theSanta Fe locomotives is 35 per cent., andthe increase in total equivalent heatingsurface is 38 per cent. The Burlingtonlocomotives are fitted with superheaters, and in making the above comparison each the firebox has a combustion chamber, and room had to be p
