Carter’s Grove plantation closed its doors to public viewing in 2003. Build for Carter Burwell, heir to one of Colonial Virginia’s most well-known families of Robert "King" Carter, and was completed in 1755. Over the next several hundred years, the original mansion was changed by a series of owners. Ironically, Carter’s Grove rests upon an earlier English settlement circa 1620 called Martin’s Hundred. This settlement was destroyed by the Indian Massacre of 1622 and archeologist worked the ‘dig’ beginning in 1976 to learn about early American history.
