BUILT IN 1880 TO DEFEND THE AREA AND RESTRICT MARITIME TRAFFIC BOUND FOR AMSTERDAM. ISLAND WAS USED BY GERMANY IN WORLD WAR II AS PART OF THE ATLANTIC WALL LINE OF DEFENCE.
