A neuropathic ulcer is a breakdown in tissue that has been induced by trauma that would have been detected by a person with “normal” peripheral sensations. As such, these ulcers are typically found in patients with diabetes due to their advanced development of peripheral neuropathy. Diabetic ulcers are one example of neuropathic ulcers. They always occur on the foot. They occur either as perforating ulcers on the sole of the foot beneath the heads of the metatarsals or at other bony prominences the toes, the ball of the great toe, the malleoli of the ankle or the heel (seen here).
