Peret states In conclusion that it is of no consequenceto the exactness or regularity of the results if a more or lessplastic material is placed betTieen the compressed faces of thespecimen and the plates of the machine. The results obtained in tris investigation using greasedplates agree i-ith Perets conclusion. The 6-ln. cubes testedbetween greased plates gave as high strengths as any 1-2-4 cubestested. Tlie unit stresses of S-in. cubes tested between greasedplates and loaded with equal loads in two directions are morenearly the stresses which could be developed in a structure thanthe stresses found when plates were not greased. It is thoughtthat, with the greased plates, there was still some friction ofthe plates left, and that this was g-reat enough to melce thestrength of the cubes greater than that of the cylinders.
