These pavements rested on layers ofclay which extended several feet beyond them, and gradu-ally thinned out towards the edge. On a level with thelower pavement we found the remains of a series of massivestakes with square-cut ends, which appeared to surround were very much decayed, and it was difficult to ascer-tain their original number, but seven were noted, which
