Tram view of Kaliningrad: modern state of the westernmost tramway in Russia
The Kaliningrad (ex- Koenigsberg) tram system now features the single route No. 5, crossing the city from the west to south-east. Some more 10 kms of double track are reserved, but not operated in regular traffic. At its most extent the system covered all parts of the city and had the length of over 50 kms of mostly double track. Starting from 1980s the tramway lost operational funding and was decreased section by section to its present state to give more space for road traffic. Most of the disused sections were lifted and replaced with asphalt. However this helped not much, and the current traffic situation in the city is pretty depressive and full of jams. The operational tram fleet numbers 39 cars, mostly articulated Tatra KT4D, few elder T4 and one new Polish Pesa Swing. In 2012-2015 some track sections were overhauled, but nevertheless the future of the Kaliningrad tramway remains uncertain. It is narrow-gauge (1,000 mm) system dating back to 1895 (electric traction) and 1882 (horse traction)
