Dinghies pulled up out of the Fleet Lagoon which runs between Chesil Beach and the mainland

The Fleet Lagoon is a stretch of brackish water caught between Chesil Beach and the mainland. It extends approx 13km (8ml) from Abbotsbury to Portland where it enters Portland Harbour beneath the Ferry Bridge which links the Isle Of Portland to the mainland. The Fleet serves as a winter home for around 5,000 Brent Geese and provides nest sites for a managed colony of 600 mute swans at Abbotsbury. It is known, locally, as the 'back water' or 'little sea'.
