The plan of this i^oem is as follows : A company of personsof various descriptions meet bj chance at the Tabard Inn,in a suburb of London, all bent on a pilgrimage to the shrineof Thomas a Becket, at Canterbury. The Pilgrims resolveto beguile the way by requiring of each one in the companya Tale, both in going and returning. These Tales, and thecharacters of the narrators prefixed, form the Poem.
