Einstein family silhouettes. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) made these silhouettes of his second family in 1919. From left: Albert Einstein, his wife Elsa and her two daughters, Ilse and Margot. Einstein had married his first wife, Mileva Maric, in 1903 and had had three children with her. However, the relationship broke down and the couple separated in 1914. In 1917, during a bout of illness, Einstein moved in with Elsa Lowenthal, his cousin, who nursed him back to health. Einstein married Elsa in June 1919, four months after divorcing Mileva, and went on to adopt Ilse and Margot.
