Popery, there was a famous image of the Virgin at Walsingham,in the county of Norfolk, which was visited by thousands of devo-tees, from the most distant parts of the island, notwithstanding theyhad similar idols in their own neighborhoods, and perhaps in theirown dwellings, occupying the same place as the penates, or house-hold gods of the ancient pagans of Greece and Rome.
