John Powell and Tau-gu. Historical image of the American Soldier, geologist and explorer Major John Wesley Powell (1834-1902), with Tau-gu, a 19th Century chief of the Paiute Native Americans. Powell is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers that included the first passage of European Americans through the Grand Canyon. He was the second director of the Geological Survey between 1881â1894, during which time he proposed policies for development of the arid American West. He was also director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution. Photographed circa 1870.
