A revolt of the army of Upper Germany in 88 was soon sup-pressed, but it led to investigations and executions at Rome of thoseimplicated, which were extended to whoever was suspected by theemperor, or was repugnant to him for his independent attitude; andthe despot displayed a demoniacal pleasure in the torments of the con-demned. A conspiracy was formed in the palace, with the connivanceof the empress Domitia, by the prefects of the guard and other men inhigh station. At an audience on September 18, 96, the chamber-lain Stephanus struck a dagger into Domitians side, and he was thenstrangled by other conspirators.
