A 1934 Nazi poster promoting the Winterhilfswerk (Winter Relief). Contribution to this charity was nominally voluntary but in reality everyone was obliged to contribute. It started as a genuine effort to help during the depression years but rapidly became a major source of income and supplanted tax-funded welfare institutions and freed up money for rearmament. It also had a powerful propaganda role of solidarity of the people. The text reads Help Victims of Hunger and Cold
