Theywere obliged to rely upon their own exertions for a livelihood, and at the age offourteen, the subject of this sketch commenced to learn the wagon-makers a roving disposition, at the age of twenty he resolved on a Beavoyage,and immediately started for Boston, where he shipped upon a sperm whaler fortwo years. The vessel cruised around the Bermudas and Western Islands, andmeeting with no success, returned to Boston in eight months. After a voyage toLiverpool, and working at his trade in Dumfries, Scotland, about two months,Captain Goddard returned to Truxton, where he remained two yean. Thisproved too quiet for him, and he again started for the 6ea. He abtpped al HewBedford, for three years, in an Arctic Ocean whaler. He here left the ship and tookanother that was to cruise on thecoast of Lower California. TheCaptain threatening one day to re-turn Goddard and four companionsto the ship they had left, they re-solved to escape. Locking the offi-cers in the cabin one night, the five,with two others, started in an openboat for the shore, twenty-five milesdistant. They forgot, in their haste,to take water, and while exploring the country for it, the others were captured,but Goddard escaped.
