KING l^A History of Missouri and Missourians wanted California to be admitted as a free state and all therest of the new territory to be divided by the Missouri Com-promise line extending westward. The ne^v prosouthern lead-ers in Missouri now saw an opportunity to defeat Benton andthey planned carefully and well. A set of resolutions, called the Jackson Resolutions,were introduced in the Mission Senate by Claiborne F. Jack-son. These resolutions stated that only the people in a terri-tory could prohibit slavery and that Congress did not have thispower. They further declared that if Congress did assumesuch power, then Missouri would stand by the southern, slave-holding slates. Finally, they instructed Missouris UnitedStates Senators to vote accordingly. These resolutions wereadopted by the Legislature by a large vote and were sent toboth Benton and Atchison.
