In 1993, Einseln returned to Estonia at the request of Estonian President Lennart Meri to serve as the first commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, holding this post until his resignation in 1995. Einseln died on March 16, 2017. His widow, Kitti Einseln, received the American flag from his casket during the full honors service.
