A few drops pro-duce anaesthesia in the palatal part of the gum behind the max-illary incisors and cuspids, in five minutes. (See Table IV.) 90 ORAL ANAESTHESIA 4. POSTERIOR PALATINE INJECTION To get anaesthesia of the posterior part of the palate andpalatal part of the gum, the needle is inserted near the gingivalmargin of the mesial part of the third molar (in children, ofthe last molar present.) Push it slightly upward and back-ward, till the palatal process is reached. The main trunk ofthe nerve passes forward in a groove between the alviolar andpalatal process, and if the foramen is not reached exactly, weare sure to anaesthetize the anterior palatine nerve. Injectonly a few drops; if more than is injected, anaesthesia ofthe soft palate occurs, which is undesirable. The anaesthesiaoccurs in a few minutes and reaches as far forward as the cuspidteeth. (See Table IV.) 5. SP
