The Campo in Siena, described as one of the most beautiful squares in the world. It is the scene of the famous Palio horse race.


The Campo, Siena. Prior to its present form it was the site of the an old city market and possibly the Roman Forum before that. The ruling Council of Nine began buying land in 1293 and the Piazza Pubblico completed in 1349. Today it is a "must visit" for tourists but is also popular with locals as a meeting place. Many of the city's main roads converge on the Campo. Twice a year it holds the Palio horse race which attracts visitors from throughout the world.
