Woodworm damage. Woodworm is a generic term for wood-boring insect larvae that tunnel into wood. The white areas seen here are the tunnels made by the larvae. These larvae feed for several years on the interior of wooden objects. They then pupate just under the surface and the adult form emerges. The adult form reproduces, and the female lays eggs in a wooden object, starting the life cycle once more. This severe level of damage weakens wooden objects, and can cause them to collapse and disintegrate.
