Although Jean Nicot, a French am-bassador to Portugal, is credited withthe greatest service in giving tobacco itsofficial recognition, it was really firstintroduced into Europe in 1558 by Fran-cisco Fernandes, a physician who hadbeen sent by Philip II. of Spain to inves-tigate the products of Mexico. Nicot, however, on his return toFrance in about 1560, carried it toCatherine de Medici, the Queen ; and thereception it met with from her and othertitled personages gave it reputation andpopularity.
