Tortoise beetle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of a tortoise beetle (family Cassidini). Its three pairs of jointed legs are visible, as are its antennae. This beetle gets its name from the sideways and forwards extensions of it body, which, from the top, resembles a tortoise's carapace. The tortoise beetles feed on leaves and some species are pests of gardens and crops. This beetle is from the sub- tropical island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. Magnification: x15 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
