Scorpionfly. Scanning electron micrograph of a male scorpion fly (Panorpa sp.). The large male genitalia are held forward above the abdomen like the stinger of a scorpion. It has a long beak-like extension on its head that has the jaws at the end. They do not sting. Adults feed on nectar, fruit and dead insects. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
