In Vertebrates generally the fundus organsof especial interest are the retinal and choroidalbloodvessels (in some instances projected intothe vitreous humor), the choroid, the retinaand the optic nerve entrance, the last namedotherwise known as the optic disc, porusopticus, nerve-head or papilla. Although the retinal layers are generallytransparent, and not visible during life, yetthis is not true of all species; , occasionallya certain number of translucent nerve-fibresheaths (neurilemmata) are prolonged intothe retina and variously distributed over thebackground of the eye, and, by means of theophthalmoscope especially, are visible andhave been described under the name medul-lated or opaque nerve fibres. These organs and tissues will be consideredin their Fig. 1 The Relations of the Fundus Organs of a YoungEnglish Sparrow. A, area centralis; F, fovea; O, opticnerve entrance; P, pecten. The pecten stands almostvertical in this figure. (Wood and Slonaker.) [12] ANATOMY OF THE FUNDUS ORGANS IN BIRDS 13
