He did the best he could, givingthe signal to reverse whenever he saw a tie on the track, jumping off andremoving it, and on again, when the engineer would start with a full headof steam, and reduce speed, as the engine gathered headway to such arate as would admit of stopping in time, when another tie was seen. Itwas fearfully perilous; and the only wonder is that he was not wreckedlong before the chase was done.
