Close-up of a mangrove propagule, which will develop into a fully mature plant before dropping off the parent tree

In plants, vivipary occurs when seeds or embryos begin to develop before they detach from the parent. Viviparous mangroves such as Bruguiera sp. create propagules that are capable of rooting and producing new trees. The mangrove propagules are dispersed by water until eventually embedding in the shallows.
