In the year 1888 Mr. Knee-land was appointed deputy county clerk andregister of deeds, under S. J. Wall, whichposition he held two years, resigning at theexpiration of that time to become bookkeeperfor the Cummer lumber firms, a post ofgreater responsibility than the formier, butcommanding a much better salary. Notcontent always to remain an employee, sub-ject to tiie will of others, he early decidedto prepare himself for some specific life work,accordingly, while discharging his duties inthe clerks otiice, he t()(.)k up the study ofdentistry, to which he devoted his leisurehours under the direction of Dr. H. , of Cadillac.
