Na-thaniel, son of Rich-ard, appointed oneof the judges in 1692to try the witches, left the court and courageously refused to have anything todo with the business. Mr. Saltonstall was born in Salem,Mass., March 16, 1825. His father, Leverett Saltonstall,was an eminent advocate of Salem, speaker of the Houseof Representatives, president of the State Senate, anda member of Congress, respected and beloved for hisgreat i|ualities of mind and heart. Mr. Saltonstall pre-pared for matriculation at the Salem Latin School, thenentered Harvard, and graduated in 1844. He studied. LEVERETT SALTONSTALL at the Harvard Law School, graduated in 1847 with thedegrees of A. M. and LL. B., was admitted to theSuffolk bar, and practised until 1862. Mr. Saltonstallis a man of wide culture, and has been many timesasked to assume positions of trust, which, althoughrequiring much labor and time, have been mostly ofa gratuitous nature. When Mr. Cleveland was electedPresident in 1884 he appointed Mr. Saltonstall collectorof the port of Boston, which position he held until February, 1890. Amember of the Boardof Overseers of Har-vard College from1876 to 1888, Mr-Saltonstall waselected to fill anotherterm in 1889. Heis an active memberof the MassachusettsHistorical Society,and also of the NewEngland Historic(lenealogical Societyand the BostonianSociety. He is amember of the Boardof Trustees of the oldMassachusetts Soci-ety for PromotingAgricul
