A grey heron (Ardea cinerea) pecks at its foot while grooming on a sunny day in Bath, England.
This heron paid special attention to its foot while preening itself next to a canal in South-West England, UK. A regular sighting along the canal, it can often be seen catching fish, or staring intently into the water in hope of seeing one. It had feathers stuck to its beak and toes from its preening session, which you can see in the picture. The day was warm and sunniest - the nicest of the year so far and the bright light made for strong contrast in this photo. Some tweaks to the colour and contrast etc have been made in Lightroom, but nothing has been added or removed from the image itself.
