kids in a villa in buenos aires, la cava

A group of kids fight to be in a photo in "villa" La Cava (the cave), a shantytown in northern Buenos Aires. The slum or "villa" of La Cava is infamous and is mere meters away from the upscale homes in the affluent neighborhoods of Beccar and San Isidro. La Cava is one of many slums throughout Buenos Aires and access to basic public services is none to very little. It comprises 22 hectares with about a 10 block radius, and has about 12000 residents. The slum is a labrynth of very narrow streets and dwellings made of zinc sheets, cardboard, and other materials with a dirt soccer field in the center known as the "pozo." The area around the "pozo" is lower than the rest of the villa (hence the name "la cava") and is the most dangerous. You can feel the "heaviness" and contrast in attitude when walking from the outer villa into the center around the posso. Of the inhabitants who do work, many of them work as laborers and gardeners for their affluent neighbors in Beccar and San Isidro. The close vicinity of slums such as La Cava to rich neighborhoods demonstrates the wide social and economic divisions that plague Argentina. impoverished dilapidated developing underdeveloped shanty struggle excluded exclusion
