(Cut takenfrom Krause.) The synonyms in common use are hip-joint disease,tuberculous arthritis of the hip, morbus coxae, andcoxalgia. The causes of hip-disease are tuberculosis, usuallyacquired, but occasionally inherited, inherited syphilis, 121 injury from falls, blows, and probably from jumpingand from sprains, the infectious diseases of childhood,and the various causes that tend to chronic inflamma-tion in and about bones and joints. But whatever thecause, it ultimately presents the symptoms characteristicof a tuberculous arthritis, and for all practical purjDOsesmay be regarded as such.
