As shown in the horizontal section ofthe building, the intake and discharge wells are built as two longnarrow tanks parallel with the partition wall. The intake well isnext to the auxiliary apparatus and the discharge well close to thepartition wall. The walls of these wells have been brought up tosuch a height above the baseinent lloor as will preclude anydanger from flooding the building in case of extreme high waterin the river. The auxiliary engines exhaust to an 8-in. auxiliary exhaustheader wliioli oxlciuls through the basement and is supported by. A back-pressure valve, set for the receiver pressure of thecross-compound engine, is placed in this exhaust main so thatordinarily the exhaust from the auxiliaries feeds the receiver allthe steam that it will take. The surplus steam is turned by theback-pressure valve to a Hoppes form K feed-water heater placedin the boiler house near the south end of the boilers. From theauxiliary main 2}4-in. pipes are connected with the second stages unite with the drips from the auxiliary steam header and otherlive steam drips and are forced hy drip pumps to a header extendingalong the rear of the boilers. Side by side with the auxiliary exhaust main is a live steamheader for the auxiliary engines. Steam is fed to this headerthrough gate valves on the top of the main steam header locatedabove, on the partition wall as earlier described. For flexibility in operation ther
