Broad Beans, Fava Beans or Horsebeans are large edible flat beans seen here in an open pod. Broad beans are rich in L-dopa, a substance used medically in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. L-dopa is also a natriuretic agent, which might help in controlling hypertension. Some also use fava beans as a natural alternative to drugs like Viagra, because of a link between L-dopa production and the human libido. Broad beans are also rich in tyramine, and should be avoided by people taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.
