Forensic ballistics test. 3D model of the mark left by a gun's firing pin on a bullet cartridge. The scale shows this mark is millimetres across. The cartridge held a bullet, but was ejected from a gun as the bullet was fired. Unique markings (such as the indentation shown here) are made as the firing pin of a gun hits the cartridge and as the cartridge recoils from the bullet. The markings can be analysed and compared to markings on cartridges test-fired from guns suspected of being used in crimes. If they match, then that gun was used at the crime scene where the cartridge was found.
