A workman cleaning the roof of The Hastings Contemporary, formerly The Jerwood Gallery, Hastings, East Sussex, England UK

The building, by architects HAT Projects, is designed to shimmer in the light, much like the sea. A dark blue glaze ensures that the building blends with the surrounding shops, and an interesting roof means that the view from the cliffs behind is just as pleasing. The Stade area of Hastings is undergoing a major regeneration, of which the Jerwood forms a large part. In addition, a public space will be used as venue for festivals and cultural events, and a community space will hold educational classes. There are also plans for a Seafood Training School, in conjunction with London's famous Billingsgate Market, to open.
