FROM the first gathering of the faithful, after theRevolution had given Catholics nearly equal rightswith their fellow-citizens, there had been a steady increasein the body. St. Peters was long the parish church, notonly for the island, but for Brooklyn and New came St. Patricks Cathedral, more centrally situated,and affording advantages to many in what was the newand growing part of New York.
